Other SUTs to Consider. Compared to the Avalanche, some reviewers prefer the Honda Ridgeline, which they say drives more like a car. While the Ridgeline isn't quite as rugged as the Avalanche, some buyers who are trading up to a truck for the first time might appreciate its more car-like interior and performance. Unbias review of 2010 Chevy Avalanche. Cylinder deactivation is marketed as an efficient method of saving fuel and I have to admit it's the only part of the vehicle I'm disapointed with. It's been my experiance that cylinder deactivation largly engages when the vehicle is coasting...yes, I said coasting! My question is how much fuel is the vehicle using when it's coasting anyway. The other surprise is when the vehicle comes to a complete stop like at a stop sign or red light for example the vehicle goes into V8 mode...yikes! Are you kidding me...make an effort guys, program the computer to disengage the additional 4 cylinders for fuel savings while the vehicle is stopped/idoling. I love the truck I really really do but come on.
So here is my advise, it rides nice, it feels solid, fit and finish is great, my family feels really safe, but if your going to market cylinder deactivation as a fuel savings devise then configure the darn thing to save as much fuel as is reasonably possible. Okay, i'll get off my soap box...at the end of the day I love the truck!!!!

2010 Chevrolet Avalanche.. After many months of research and test drives I finally purchased a vehicle. It's a 2010 Avalanche LS4wd with the 1AS package. It has a rear camera, back up audibles, buttons on steering wheel etc, etc. basically it's more than an LS but less than a LT.
Having owned the truck for a number of weeks now a number of things has surprised me. First of all I'm surprised at just how much I enjoy driving this vehicle. Sure it's comfortable but most vehicles in this price range are comfortable...it's more than that. I think it has something to do with how high the driver sits. This vehicle is shorter and more narrow than a silverado and yet it sits higher. It's a great seating position. To give you a sence of scale I sit as high in my Avalanche as people do on the city bus...yup, it's that high!. If you noticed I didn't give the Avalance full 5 stars for performance and you may be wondering about that. It has to do with cylinder deactivation.

One of the massive updates the Avalanche has gone through is the inclusion of a is the addition of a new Hydra Matic 6L80 six-speed, automatic transmission which takes the place of old four-speed 4L60 unit. Under the hood of the 2WD there is a 5.3L OHV V-8 that produces 320 bhp and a torque of 340 lb/ft while the 4WDs are equipped with a 5.3L OHV V-8 pumping 310 bhp and a torque of 335 lb/ft made from an aluminum block, it will later switch over to an iron-block 5.3L getting a 320 bhp and 340 lb/ft. it also features an Active Fuel Management system, which automatically shuts off half the cylinders under light loads, and a Flex Fuel capability, allowing it to run on E85 Ethanol. Both the 2WD and 4WD models are also available with an optional 6.0L OHV V-8 that consists of the Active Fuel Management system as well as Variable Valve Timing making 366 bhp and 376 lb/ft of torque. The gasoline 5.3L V-8 gets an EPA-estimate of 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, while the Flex-Fuel 5.3L V-8 gets a poor 10 mpg city and 15 mpg on highways. The 6.0L V-8 fairs better than the flex fuel version, with 14 mpg city and 19 mpg on the highway.

In two-wheel-drive form, the LS starts at $35,725, the LT starts at $38,830 and the LTZ at $45,815. Four-wheel drive adds $3,050 to the price tag. New for 2010, the single-speed transfer case is standard on 4WD, and a two-speed transfer case is optional.
Avalanche’s exterior design is lean, as well as agile-looking, and for 2010, the clean-looking exterior (especially compared to the original design with cladding) and steeply raked windshield help generate more mainstream appeal. The radical windshield angle makes the truck look sleeker and improves aerodynamics, which helps fuel economy.
The front end wears a wraparound body-color fascia. It’s basically an appearance item, but one that’s aero-molded to help fuel efficiency. The Avalanche has a handsome headlight and grille treatment — one that fits with the entire Chevrolet family theme.
Propelling the behicle is a standard 5.3-liter V-8, generating 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. Bolted to an efficient six-speed automatic transmission, estimated mileage is 15 mpg city/21 highway.
With a 4.10 axle ratio, the Avalanche has a towing capacity of 8,000 pounds. The workhorse ability for which Avalanche is best known is its cargo hauling, which displays the flexibility of a Midgate system. The cargo box is 5 feet 3 inches long, and has a standard locking tailgate and a hard three-piece tonneau cover that Chevy boasts gives it the “largest trunk in the industry.”

Folding down the Midgate expands the composite cargo floor to 8 feet, 2 inches long. You can lock the tailgate to protect cargo from the elements, as well as from thieves. Removing the cargo cover allows hauling of taller items.
The Avalanche has a notably cavernous 20-plus-liter console, ideal for stowing a purse or a laptop. The glove compartment also is large.
Premium materials are used in the interior. It’s dressed with chrome accents, brushed metal, woodgrain and leather. The LTZ model is upgraded with heated-and-cooled leather seats and a Bose surround-sound stereo.

The GMT900 Avalanche was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2006. Production of the redesigned Avalanche began at the Silao Assembly in March 2006. The Avalanche maintains the styled front end much like its sister vehicles, the Tahoe/Yukon and Suburban/Yukon XL, yet it still has the distinct midgate and integrated bed as found on the previous incarnation. It has all the same standard and available features as the Suburban and the Tahoe.

Later models introduced another version of the Vortec 5.3-liter V8 as the engine is now capable of running on E85 ethanol. When the 5.3 is running on normal gasoline, it produces 320 horsepower (239 kW) and 335 pound-feet (454 N·m) of torque whereas its output rises to 326 horsepower (243 kW) and 348 pound-feet (472 N·m) of torque on E85, up from 310 horsepower (231 kW) and 335 pound-feet (454 N·m) in 2009. For the 2010 model year, the 6.0 was dropped from the Avalanche lineup which left the 5.3 V8 as the only engine available for the truck. In its final year, the 6.0 produced 366 horsepower (273 kW) and 376 pound-feet (510 N·m) of torque.

Soon after the release of the
Chevy Avalanche customers began to notice cosmetic problems with the cladding on their vehicles. Over time exposure to heat and sunlight would cause a chalky faded appearance. It was especially noticeable on the cargo bed panels, and sailpanel windows where "Zebra Striping" would appear. Customer reaction to this problem resulted in General Motors agreeing to a one time treatment of a product called ArmorDillo. Chevrolet Avalanche

This product would temporarily restore the cladding for a period of about 6 months. After that it would wear off then need to be re-applied. Realizing this was not a permanent solution, GM, together with Gatorback Coatings, developed a coating that could be applied to the cladding to restore it to a like-new shine. This product was designed to etch into the plastic and bond a new layer of tinted acrylic over the faded plastic.

Customers within the 3yr/36,000 original factory warranty could go to their dealership to have it restored under their original warranty under GM TSB:04-08-111-001C. GM did not use side body cladding on the second generation model. General Motors has also identified the original source of the faded cladding.

The Chevrolet Avalanche is a four-door, five or six passenger sport utility truck sharing GM's long-wheelbase chassis used on the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade EXT. A series of three removable panels form a watertight top for the cargo bed. The name Avalanche derives from the dangerous and sudden collapse of mountain snowpacks known as the avalanche.
Avalanche was launched in 2001 as a 2002 model on the GMT800 platform. First year Avalanches featured light gray plastic body cladding, intended to provide visual distinction from the Suburban/Yukon XL. Avalanche also gave the public an advance look at the next generation of front fascia designs for the entire GM line. A full-length chrome strip splits each lamp assembly and the grille, with a gold Chevrolet "bow tie" in the center. The hood and fenders featured aggressive folds, in contrast to the soft box of the other GMT800 models.

2003 models featured darker cladding, but GM's new president, Rick Wagoner, demanded deletion of this "unpopular" trim (as did certain elements of the public). From mid-year, Avalanche could be ordered without the cladding. The uncladded model, known as the Without Body Hardware (or better by its acronym "WBH"), and alternatively called "slicksides" by GM marketers, resembles the '03-'05 Silverado in the front.

Avalanche was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award and was Motor Trend magazine's SUV of the Year for 2002[1].
There are two engine choices:
A Vortec 5.3 L V8 producing 290 hp (216 kW), for the half-ton 1500 series;

Compared to the first-generation Avalanche, the new truck is significantly less plasticky, without the big add-on trim that gave the original a gaudy look. "The previous Avalanche's body cladding is gone, replaced with integrated rocker panels and bumpers," Cars.com says. Trim and with a bit of the off-roading look built into the sail panels behind the cabin windows, the Avalanche has a nicely brief truck bed, pronounced fenders, and a big twin-grille front end that shares genes with the noses on the new Chevrolet Malibu and Traverse. Cars.com contends the Chevrolet Avalanche 2010 "closely resembles the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe up front, though with an overall length of 221 inches it's nearly as long as Chevrolet's full-size Suburban SUV."

The 2010 Chevy Avalanche offers a rare combination of six-passenger comfort and an eight-foot pickup bed when you need it (though not at the same time). The Cadillac Escalade EXT is structurally identical to the Avalanche but carries a stiff luxury premium. The Honda Ridgeline is a cheaper choice, but not by much-and the light-duty truck only has a short pickup bed, offering no flexibility with cabin and bed space. The Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram both come in four-door versions with fixed beds and fixed rear seats, but often at a much lower base price than the highly featured Avalanche.

The 2010 Chevy Avalanche earns five-star crash ratings from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), but hasn't been tested by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It's fitted with a comprehensive set of safety features, including front, side, and curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; and stability and traction control. Part SUV, part pickup truck, the Chevrolet Avalanche has always been an odd duck. A hot-selling odd duck. While other SUV/pickup mutations like the Subaru Baja have floundered in the marketplace, Chevy has sold more than 379,500 Avalanches since the spring of 2001. Turns out there's a market for a Suburban with a bed.

The redesigned 2007 Chevy Avalanche gets the all-new platform, the new interior, and the new look Chevy has already debuted on the 2007 Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. That means it's unquestionably better performing and more refined than the truck it's replacing.

When it reaches dealers this spring, three trim levels will be offered — LS, LT and LTZ — each with rear- or four-wheel drive. A Z71 off-road package will be offered later in the model year.

At the start of production, every Avalanche will come with a 5.3-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management which seamlessly switches from eight-cylinder to four-cylinder operations to save fuel. When it's running on all eight, the 5.3 makes 320 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 340 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm in 2WD models, and 310 hp with 335 lb-ft of torque in 4WD models.

An all-aluminum 6.0-liter V8 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management will be added to the lineup later. It's rated at 355 hp at 5,400 rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm in the two- and four-wheel-drive models. And while both Avalanche engines run on 87 octane regular, the 5.3 can also run on E85 which is a blend of cleaner-burning 85-percent ethanol and 15-percent gasoline. Both engines are also backed by a four-speed automatic transmission, and carry the same maximum tow rating — 8,000 pounds for the 2WD models and 7,800 pounds with 4WD. Dimensionally, the new Avalanche is nearly identical to its predecessor, but its bed has grown 2 inches longer. The new measurements are 5.3 feet long with the unique Midgate closed and 8.2 feet with it open and the rear seat folded. Chevy says with the Midgate open and the rear seat folded, the Avalanche can carry 4-by-8-foot sheets of plywood with the tailgate closed. Also worth mentioning is the availability of Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist in combination with a rearview camera for the ultimate in safety while backing up. Chevy has also made the StabiliTrak stability control system with new rollover-mitigation technology standard and has added head-protection side curtain airbags to the options list.

Stuck somewhere between an SUV and a truck, the Avalanche is a good choice for people who do moderate hauling or towing, but still want a comfortable interior with plenty of seating.

The Chevy Avalanche is a four-door, five-seat Sport Utility Truck. That means its interior is similar to an SUV's, but instead of an enclosed cargo area, the Avalanche has a small pickup bed. While pickup purists may not think the Avalanche's bed is big enough, the Avalanche has a trick up its sleeve: a folding midgate and removable back glass lets you to trade the second row for more room in the bed. When you don't need the cargo space any more, it's easy to return the backseat. Because the Avalanche is so multi-functional, most reviewers like it.
But while the Avalanche is multifunctional, that doesn't mean it's perfect. It one of the more expensive SUTs you can buy, and some reviewers prefer the Honda Ridgeline, which they say drives more like a car. While the Ridgeline isn't quite as rugged as the Avalanche, some buyers who are trading up to a truck for the first time might appreciate its more car-like interior and performance.

However, the Ridgeline's maximum tow rating is about 3,000 pounds less than the Avalanche's and the Ridgeline doesn't have the foldable midgate, so you're stuck with a smaller bed. On the other hand, the Ridgeline is about $7,000 cheaper than the Avalanche.

Chevrolet Avalanche is one of the more versatile vehicles on the road today. It successfully blends the comfort and passenger capacity of an SUV with the cargo flexibility of a pickup truck. While these two main attributes are also associated with full-size crew cab pickups, the Avalanche goes one step further with its distinctive fold-down midgate.

The term "midgate" refers to the removable wall that separates the cabin from the bed. The rear window and the wall separating the cabin from the bed can be opened up, either in part (by flipping down the midgate wall so a pass-through is created) or in whole (by also removing the rear window).
Since its debut, the Chevrolet Avalanche has been based on General Motors' full-size SUV platform. This means that its basic underpinnings and powertrains are similar to those of other GM full-size utes. It also means that Cadillac builds a similar version called the Escalade EXT. Though it costs a bit more than the average crew-cab pickup, the versatile Avalanche has proven to be a reasonable sales success. For the shopper in need of a jack-of-all-trades vehicle, either generation of this unusual truck should make for a smart choice.
Current Chevrolet Avalanche. The Chevrolet Avalanche is a full-size SUV with an open bed in back as opposed to the normally covered, wagon-like cargo compartment. The midgate feature allows one to quickly change this rig from a six-passenger crew cab pickup with a 5-foot 3-inch cargo box to a three-passenger pickup with an approximate 8-foot cargo box. Bonus features include removable cargo covers and storage compartments placed along the outside of the cargo box. There are three main trim levels: base Avalanche LS, mid-grade Avalanche LT (actually comprised of 1LT and 2LT subsets) and plush Avalanche LTZ. All models are equipped standard with a 5.3-liter V8 (310 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque) with a 6.0-liter V8 (366 hp and 376 lb-ft) optional. Both V8s come matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.
In reviews, we found the Avalanche to be comfortable and smooth-riding for such a capable workhorse. Performance is sprightly considering the Avalanche's heft. The big truck is relatively easy to drive on open roads, thanks to precise steering and predictable handling. Maneuvering in tight spots is tough, however, due to the Avalanche's massive size and considerable blind spots astern. Used Chevrolet Avalanche Models

The present, second-generation Chevy Avalanche debuted for 2007. Sleeker exterior styling, a sharper and more precise driving feel and increased interior refinement are the chief advantages compared to the first-generation Avalanche. Changes for this generation since '07 have been minimal. Prior to 2009, the 5.3-liter V8 was rated slightly differently (310 hp for the 4WD and 320 hp for the 2WD) and all Avalanches had a four-speed automatic transmission.
The original 2002-'06 Chevrolet Avalanche established itself with its innovative midgate. The foldable midgate allowed the rear seats to be lowered and the cargo area to be expanded to the length of a long bed on a normal pickup. In terms of passenger room and cargo bed versatility, this truck is very similar to the current one. At its debut, the first-generation model was offered with two- or four-wheel drive and in 1500 (half-ton) or 2500 (3/4-ton) designations. The 1500 came with a 5.3-liter V8 good for 285 hp. The 2500 model had a 340-hp 8.1-liter V8 as well as higher towing and payload capacities. Both engines came standard with a four-speed automatic transmission. In reviews conducted on the debut model, the truck received high marks for its versatile and innovative cab configuration, comfortable seating and more nimble nature compared to true crew-cab pickups of the day.
Downsides included compromised outward visibility, low-grade interior materials and awkward exterior styling. That last attribute was frequently attributed to the truck's standard-issue gray-color lower body cladding. Chevrolet wisely made it an option starting in 2003. Shoppers interested in a used Chevy Avalanche should keep in mind that small but notable changes were made for most of the vehicle's run. These include a special North Face Edition for '03 as well as the addition of optional stability control and a slight drop in rated power for the 8.1-liter V8 the following year.

It's GM's Transformer truck-since 2002 the Chevrolet Avalanche has taken the full-size pickup for an interesting ride by offering a flexible cabin and bed that trade places when needed. There's a Midgate in the middle, and when it's up, the Avalanche seats five and carries a short bed full of stuff; when it's down, the ‘Lanche seats up to three across the front and opens the bed into the cabin for more than eight feet of linear bed space. With a base price of about $36,000 and rising to more than $47,000, the Avalanche has few competitors save for GM's own Cadillac Escalade EXT, the four-door Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab, and the Honda Ridgeline.

The latest Avalanche joined the GM lineup in 2007, and it's changed very little in terms of styling. ForbesAutos notes it's "a cross between a full-size SUV and a full-size pickup truck." Kelley Blue Book points out that the Chevrolet Avalanche 2010's "monochromatic exterior features wraparound fascias that eliminate bumper-to-body gaps," adding that a "sleek windshield angle extends into a smoother roofline, the front air dam is low and wide and prominent fenders with integrated wheel flares complement the bulging power-dome hood." Compared to the first-generation Avalanche, the new truck is significantly less plasticky, without the big add-on trim that gave the original a gaudy look. "The previous Avalanche's body cladding is gone, replaced with integrated rocker panels and bumpers," Cars.com says. Trim and with a bit of the off-roading look built into the sail panels behind the cabin windows, the Avalanche has a nicely brief truck bed, pronounced fenders, and a big twin-grille front end that shares genes with the noses on the new Chevrolet Malibu and Traverse. Cars.com contends the Chevrolet Avalanche 2010 "closely resembles the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe up front, though with an overall length of 221 inches it's nearly as long as Chevrolet's full-size Suburban SUV."

The cockpit's very well designed and fitted, with six- and five-passenger versions having distinct interiors. Cars.com says its "interior styling cues echo the Tahoe and Suburban, with a curvaceous dashboard," and calls it a "carlike environment that's far beyond GM's previous interiors." Ordering twin bucket seats in front leaves the ‘Lanche with a wide center console that can be trimmed in wood grain; in six-seat form, the console goes away, leaving a higher, plainer dash in its place. The door panels echo the fenders, and the gauges are big and clearly laid out, with minimal fuss. ForbesAutos simply reports that the 2010 Chevy Avalanche's "nice two-tone interior is crafted from high-quality materials," while Car and Driver pays a halfhearted compliment to the "decent interior."
